The Sunday Jam at Passing Clouds is now in its 6th year; The jazz at the Haggerston previously known as Uncle Sam's longer. The Kora, Mali,
Electro acoustic Kora. I did not anticipate this when I first heard the "ethereal sound" as described by Lucy Duran. This is a very different music. The instrument has evolved too.

Sunday night Jazz at the Haggerston Pub is an institution. Some call it going to "the Church" Many still call it Uncle Sam's. The last night of Uncle Sam's was 14th October 2007 and for a while there was a fear that the Jazz would be no more. Some of the images from the last night are in this video.

http:www.hibla.com/passingclouds The top-ranking Afro-reggae showcase hosted by the mighty SOOTHSAYERS bassist Kodjovi Kush!
AFROSPOT is an inspiring and magical night, designed to present and celebrate the rich cultural and musical heritage of Africa.
Kodjovi Kush brings you the uplifting energy and warm vibes of his musical heritage in this truly inclusive party.
Featuring a heavyweight line up live on stage:
****THE AFROSPOT ALL-STARS*****
A truly stellar line up featuring:
Emanuel Afram: Bass
Luzmira Zerpa: Vocals, Percussion
Sean: Percussion
Kodjovi Kush: Bass, Guitar, Vocals
Phil Dawson: Lead Guitar
Wesley Joseph: Drums
Idris Rahman: Tenor Saxophone
Nick Walters: Trumpet
Tim Cox: Trombone
Earl: Organ, Keyboard Piano.
Kodjovi Kush was born in Togo, raised in Israel and spent a large portion of his youth moving around Europe due to his father's job
as an ambassador. He seized the opportunity to soak up the musical influences of the cultures he found himself in, finding
inspiration in everything from reggae, African jazz, blues, rock, and even ballet, as well as the Togolese rhythms of his homeland.
During a brief stint in Paris, Kush gained work experience in local music studios and learnt the basics of studio recording. After
Paris, he was positioned in Gabon where he worked in the Oscar Studio and became the musical director for the Lycée Léomba
Orchestra, which taught him how to organise musicians and inspired a passion for playing in harmony with others.
Soon after arriving in London in the mid-nineties, Kodjovi infiltrated the scene surrounding the Africa Centre in Covent Garden
where he met and worked with legends of the African music world. He became a session musician, working with Finley Quaye amongst
others, but decided to return to his roots and create his own projects.
Through the Africa Centre, Kodjovi was introduced to Adesose Wallace who brought him into his band, Ibile. Building up his skills in
musical leadership.

An installation on the front lawn of Tate Modern during the Long Weekend annual festival. Over 100,000 members of the public passed through this temporary environment of artists, designers, inventors and engineers. The theme for the festival was Arte Povera, a term coined by the Italian critic and curator Germano Celant in 1967. It was at a time of great economic and political instability and this art movment was seen as a reaction against the dominance of Pop Art, mass consumerism and capitalism. In the spirit of Arte Povera our installation was a celebration of experimentation, art without restraint. We used natural and found materials to reflect the relationship between art and life. Like the historic event that inspired it, this event was extremely relevant in the current economic and political times.

Dominique Baron-Bonarjee, ImageSoundStream: First Position:
Presented at Seamus Ryan Photo Studio, London, 2008
'First Position' is a site-specific performance that incorporates movement, installation, texts and a photo exhibition.
The tale of a disappearance told through an enigmatic fable. A woman vanishes after a fashion shoot with a photographer. He says she was murdered and has the photographic evidence, but her body is never found. The story is an 'investigation': a search for the hidden clues needed to find out what lies behind the mystery. It develops a language of symbolism through a range of characters, voices and choreography. It questions the power and responsibility of the image makers in a society driven by what it sees: a place inhabited by exhibitionists and voyeurs, where the image makes fantasy and reality indistinguishable.
This was an idea expressed, developed and re-expressed and now being processed yet again, and none of us understand it. Do we trust the reality of what we think we see. Thank you Dominique for making this possible. I sort of like my reaction to what I saw. I did see, and the sound of my own voice triggering the photographs being taken.I loved your latest vid https://vimeo.com/64267289

This week's dose of hot jazz comes to you courtesy of Dakota Jim, Louisa Jones, Lizy Excell, and your host Ewan Bleach!

ABOUT THE CAKEWALK CAFE

A night of vintage jazz upstairs at Passing Clouds every Wednesday.

The Cakewalk Café is a step through life's looking glass into the gin-soaked dancehalls of the prohibition age. From hot jazz to swing, ragtime to music hall, it's all here, jumbled up like an old-time jamboree.

Slick back your hair, tug your weskit and don't forget that the floor is for dancing over.

The superb Ewan Bleach will usually be there at the piano to accompany singers and as long as it's a jazz or blues song you are very welcome to take the mic.
